Promoting empathy is absolutely essential to building a coalition for trans rights, yes. However, I believe that it is critical to understand that cis people will never have a perfect understanding of being trans. The efforts to make trans people “relatable” to cis people has diminished many of our experiences to the point that they are no longer taken with the seriousness they deserve. That is what this piece is about.
